BACOLOD CITY – The General Alliance of Workers Association (GAWA) has lauded the linemen of Negros Power for their dedication to duty despite dangerous working conditions, including exposure to extreme weather.
In a press statement released to the Daily Guardian on Monday, GAWA emphasized the critical importance and risks involved in the work of Negros Power’s linemen, describing them as “brave men and women keeping the lights on.”
“It is high time we honor these workers for powering through danger and maintaining the lines with courage,” the statement said.
GAWA called linemen the “unsung heroes” of the power industry, expressing admiration for their unparalleled devotion to duty and encouraging stakeholders in the power sector to appreciate their contributions.
One of their key roles, GAWA noted, is ensuring public safety by preventing electrical hazards and protecting communities from fires, electrocution, and other accidents.
Linemen also maintain reliable energy supply by repairing power lines, ensuring uninterrupted electricity for homes, businesses, and essential services.
Their work supports economic development by providing dependable power for industries, commerce, and agriculture.
In emergencies, linemen swiftly restore power after natural disasters, facilitating rescue operations and humanitarian efforts.
They are essential to community development, enabling education, healthcare, and communication services by maintaining power infrastructure.
However, GAWA highlighted the risks and challenges faced by Negros Power linemen, including exposure to high-voltage power lines, which puts them at risk of electrocution and electric shocks.
Linemen also face the danger of falls while working at elevated heights, often in severe weather conditions.
They endure physical strain from heavy lifting, climbing, and working in confined spaces, as well as fatigue and stress caused by long work hours in extreme temperatures, rain, wind, and storms.
GAWA urged the public to recognize and support linemen through social media campaigns, a “Thank You Campaign,” and moral support, including prayers for their safety.
The group also advocated for policies promoting linemen’s welfare, safety, and fair compensation, pushing for enhanced benefits, insurance, and protection for these workers.
GAWA pledged to collaborate with Negros Power and stakeholders to advance advocacy efforts highlighting the vital contributions and sacrifices of Negros Power’s linemen.
“These workers are indispensable, and their dedication deserves our gratitude and recognition,” the statement concluded.
