‘GENDER GAP’: Guimaras registers 91 males per 100 female live births in July ‘20

Registered live births by usual residence of mothers in Guimaras province was at 221 in July 2020, where 52.49 percent, or 116 live births, were females and 47.51 percent, or 105 live births, were males.

The data translates to a gender gap of 4.98 percent which means that there are 91 male live births for every 100 female live births recorded in Guimaras.

By municipality, majority of the live births recorded in July 2020 were in Jordan with 147 live births or 66.52 percent of the provincial total.

Next to Jordan was the municipality of Nueva Valencia with 35 live births or 15.84 percent, followed by the municipality of Buenavista with 33 live births or 14.93 percent.

The least number of live births came from the municipality of San Lorenzo with 1 live birth or 0.45 percent of the total, next to the municipality of Sibunag with 5 live births or 2.26 percent.

In Jordan, majority of the recorded live births were males, accounting for 53.74 percent or 79 of the municipal total, while 46.26 percent or 68 live births were females, showing a gender gap of 7.48 percent. This simply means that there were 116 males per 100 female live births recorded in Jordan for the month of July 2020.

Meanwhile, most live births recorded in the municipality of Buenavista during the same reference period were females which accounted 19 or 57.58 percent of the municipal total.

Male live births in the municipality on the other hand, were recorded at 14 or 42.42 percent, revealing a gender gap of 15.15 percent with a sex ratio of 74 male live births per 100 female live births.

For the municipality of Nueva Valencia, 71.43 percent or 25 live births recorded were females while the remaining 28.57 percent or 10 live births were males. Thus, there were 15.84 percent more female live births than male live births recorded in the municipality for the month of July where for every 100 female live births, there were 40 male live births recorded.

In San Lorenzo, only one (1) female live birth was recorded for the month of July 2020.

For the municipality of Sibunag, 60 percent of live births recorded were females which accounted for three (3) live births, while 40.00 percent or two (2) live births recorded in the municipality were males, indicating a gender gap of 20.00 percent with a sex ratio of 67 male live births for every 100 female live births.

Live Birth is defined as the complete expulsion or extraction from its mother of a product of conception, irrespective of the duration of the pregnancy, which after such separation, breathes or shows any other evidence of life, such as beating of the heart, pulsation of the umbilical cord, or definite improvement voluntary muscles, whether or not the umbilical cord has been cut or the placenta is attached, each product of such a birth is considered live born.
