Globe, a leading digital solutions provider, has completed a pioneering pilot program across 26 sites that incorporates hybrid solar power into network operations, underscoring a significant push towards environmental sustainability and cost efficiency.
The move aligns with the company’s ambitious objective to reach Net Zero Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions by the mid-century.
Spanning from 2022 to 2023, the innovative program was executed across a variety of Globe’s operational sites including three in the National Capital Region (NCR), 17 in South Luzon, and six in Mindanao.
The selection of sites presents a microcosm of the Philippines’ diverse geographical and infrastructural landscape, from urban centers to remote areas.
Historically, these sites have depended on diesel generators, with some locations struggling with inconsistent power supply—often referred to as “bad-grid” sites.
The introduction of hybrid solar power represents a transformative step for these towers, which can now operate with either exclusively renewable energy aided by battery storage systems, or a mix of renewables and diesel, depending on the location’s specific needs.
The results of this initiative have been nothing short of extraordinary, heralding a new era of energy use for Globe.
The company has reported a reduction of over 119,000 liters of diesel fuel usage and a decrease of over 67,000 kWh in electricity consumption.
In monetary terms, this equates to approximately PHP6.9 million in savings—a figure that not only attests to the program’s environmental benefits but also its fiscal prudence.
Joel Agustin, Globe’s Network Planning and Engineering Head, has heralded the program’s success as a testament to the company’s commitment to sustainability.
“Successfully implementing hybrid solar power across multiple sites represents a big leap in our efforts to decarbonize our operations,” Agustin said.
He also emphasized the program’s role in reinforcing Globe’s reputation as the Most Sustainability-Driven Network Operator in the country.
For decades, Globe’s network relied heavily on the national power grid, dominated by coal-sourced electricity, and diesel generators for backup power—especially in areas lacking reliable grid connectivity.
The pivot to sustainable energy is crucial, with the company recognizing the imperative need to transition from traditional power sources that contribute to the country’s carbon footprint.
The implemented hybrid solar solution is a composite of several cutting-edge components. Among these is the Solar Mini-Grid, designed to be scalable and adaptable, providing direct power to on-site equipment, and suitable for challenging terrains where deployment may have previously been problematic.
Furthermore, the Advanced Solar Hybrid solution represents an intelligent power system prioritizing solar energy, with a diesel generator in place only as a secondary source.
The success of the pilot program has poised Globe to expand this technology across more sites. This strategic move is part of a broader initiative to integrate green solutions and innovative technologies to minimize the network’s overall carbon footprint.
Globe’s resolve in pursuing environmental sustainability is a reflection of its commitment to responsible corporate citizenship.
As Globe continues to push the boundaries of green telecommunications, this project represents a significant step towards a more sustainable and resilient future for the industry. It’s not only about reducing costs or complying with environmental mandates; it’s about redefining the role of telecom operators in the fight against climate change.
In addition to the environmental and cost benefits, such initiatives contribute to the wider global goals of sustainable development and responsible business practices. By demonstrating the viability and advantages of renewable energy in operational efficiency, Globe sets a precedent that could inspire other industries to follow suit.
With the conclusion of the pilot, Globe has charted a course for a gradual yet determined shift across its operations. The company stands at the vanguard of a revolution in energy consumption within the telecommunications sector in the Philippines, signaling a potent combination of innovation, fiscal responsibility, and environmental stewardship.
