San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich is now stable and recovering at home after experiencing a medical incident while dining at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse on April 19, 2025.
In a report first aired by TMZ and announced by the San Antonio Express-News, Popovich fainted in the restaurant and had to be transported to a hospital via an ambulance.
As of this writing, the specific medical diagnosis is yet to be determined if it has any relation to his mild stroke.
Popovich was already doing well in the past weeks, with some reports from ESPN and San Antonio Express-News stating that he is on track to make a coaching comeback after the playoffs.
From a great level of concern, Popovich’s quick recovery scrapped rumors of him taking a leave of absence for at least a year.
On November 3, 2024, Popovich suffered mild stroke days before their NBA regular season matchup with the Minnesota Timberwolves took place.
Due to the unfortunate incident, Spurs assistant coach Mitch Johnson took over Popovich’s place and acted as the franchise’s interim head coach until the regular season concluded.
Currently, the Spurs medical staff are hands-on in making sure that the decorated mentor gets all the things that he needs.
“Coach Pop has been the leader of this organization for the last three decades. We all have come across or know people that just have a different aura, a different presence about them,” said San Antonio general manager Brian Wright.
