The province of Guimaras produced 2,169 metric tons (MT) of corn in 2021, up by 2.6 percent from 2,114 MT in 2020, mainly propelled by yellow corn production which grew by 7.66%, according to the data released by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA).
“Corn yield in the province in 2020 and 2021 was mostly the yellow corn which contributed to the provincial total by 50.51% and 53.75%, respectively, while the white corn shared 48.08% and 46.24%, correspondingly,” Provincial Statistical Officer Nelida B. Losare said.
White corn production in 2021 at 1,003 MT posted a 2.71 percent decrease from 1,031-MT output in 2020 while yellow corn yielded 1,166 MT in 2021, posting 7.77 percent growth from 1,083 MT produced in 2020.
“The increment in corn yield was due to the expansion in area harvested by 17 hectares of yellow corn, from 264 has. in 2020 to 281 has. in 2021 or a 6.44 percent increment,” Losare said.
The total area harvested with corn in 2021 was 653 hectares, a 0.62 percent expansion or equivalent to 4 hectares over 649 hectares in 2020.
Meanwhile, the area harvested with white corn at 372 was 13 hectares less than its area in 2020 of 385 hectares, while yellow corn got the largest shares of white corn in 2020 and 2021.
