THE Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)-Guimaras successfully opened the month-long celebration of the 30th National Statistics Month (NSM) with the Kaathagan sa Estadistika on October 9, 2019.
“The Kaathagan sa Estadistika is the first ever activity designed by the Provincial Statistics Committee (PSC) to highlight the opening program for this year’s celebration of the NSM pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 647, ‘Declaring the Month of October of every year as the National Statistics Month’,” explained PSC chairperson Nelida B. Losare, who is also the Provincial Statistics Officer of PSA-Guimaras.
The activity aimed at promoting the importance of quality statistics which will help policymakers design responsive and evidence-based plans, programs and informed decisions. It also aided the participants understand the concepts and the methodologies used in the computation of a particular indicator.
The topics were: “Banking Statistics in Guimaras, Clean Note Policy and Currency Integrity” delivered by Lowen Andrew June Ligad, Bank Officer II of Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas; Consumer Price Index” discoursed by Mary Joy Villegas, Assistant Statistician of PSA- Guimaras; and “Facts to know about the 2020 Census of Population and Housing (CPH)” with inclusion of some results of the 2015 POPCEN presented by Ms. Losare.
In her welcome message, OIC Marlene Y. Alviar of the Regional Statistical Service Office (RSSO)-6 encourages the Guimaras Provincial Offices, LGUs, and PSC member agencies to support various undertakings of PSA including NSM activities for sustainability because Guimaras province was nominated as the best LGU advocates on statistics.
“This year’s theme “Data Innovation: Key to a Better Nation”, highlights the importance of innovative statistical systems, processes and techniques in coming up with quality statistics and being the forefront concerning the government’s statistical matters as mandated by RA 10625, the PSA is challenged to be innovative to meet the growing demands of all data users,” Alviar said.
The NSM is annually observed nationwide, which aims to promote, enhance, and instil awareness and appreciation of the importance and value of statistics to the different sectors of the society; and elicit the cooperation and support of the general public in upgrading the quality and standards of statistics in the country.
