The Guimaras Taekwondo Union (GTU) successfully held its pre-20th anniversary last April 2, 2023, by conducting a motorcade around the province while tackling some of the organization’s long-term plans regarding their programs.
In an exclusive interview by the Daily Guardian with GTU’s founder Dr. Richard Gabayoyo, the sports director of the West Visayas State University (WVSU), the organization roamed around Guimaras from Buenavista Wharf, their municipal hall, Crossing Days, Tastasan, San Roque, San Isidro, then to the GTU home gym located at Sitio Tago-on in barangay Salvation, Buenavista.
After the motorcade, the prize GTU jins had a little showcase of their taekwondo skills participated by more than 100 members.
One of the highlights of the event was the launching of the “Batang GTU” sports program spearheaded by Dr. Gabayoyo and his team.
According to Dr. Gabayoyo, the event is not only to remember their efforts in keeping the GTU program alive for 20 years but this is also a reminder to all the Guimarasnon jins to strive for greatness and practice great attitude on and off the playing venue.
“We will continue to uphold greatness as we hone not only the taekwondo skills of our students but the attitude that they may become productive citizens of the community. Also, we are looking forward that the members of GTU will become champions in life not only in taekwondo,” said Dr. Gabayoyo.
Currently, the organization is headed by Mr. Justino Maglipong, the president of the organization while Dr. Gabayoyo acts as the head instructor.
Also part of building the GTU program was Mr. Collins Natividad, Dr. Gabayoyo’s former student several years ago.
“As we approach the 20th founding anniversary this July 1, 2023, 20 years is not enough. We will still continue to serve and responsible citizens of our province,” added Dr. Gabayoyo.
