HONG KONG — A historic milestone in Southeast Asian tourism recovery was achieved on Nov. 29 as Hong Kong welcomed its 1 millionth Filipino visitor of 2024, underscoring the city’s resurgence as a top travel destination.
Miguel Linao, his wife Ana, and their three children were greeted at Hong Kong International Airport by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) as the record-breaking visitors.
“This isn’t our first trip to Hong Kong, but we never expected anything like this,” said Linao. “We’re here to support our daughter in a gymnastics competition and, of course, to enjoy the sights. Hong Kong is always a quick and exciting getaway for us.”
The Philippines emerged as Hong Kong’s top market in Southeast Asia, with Filipino arrivals making up 920,000 of the 2.3 million Southeast Asian tourists visiting the city from January to October 2024.
HKTB Executive Director Dane Cheng praised the region’s rapid recovery, highlighting Filipino travelers’ significant contribution.
“We are thrilled that Hong Kong has become the top travel destination for Filipino travelers. We are stepping up our promotion of the Hong Kong WinterFest to entice more travelers to experience our city’s vibrant festive atmosphere,” Cheng said.
Tourists from Southeast Asia have shown a 95% recovery compared to pre-pandemic levels, with Filipinos leading at 127%, signaling robust demand for Hong Kong’s attractions.
Filipinos are drawn to Hong Kong’s mix of adventure and convenience, staying an average of 3.4 nights and spending around HK$7,100 per trip. Popular spots include theme parks, markets like Temple Street, and landmarks such as the Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade.
Upcoming events, including Coldplay’s Music of the Spheres World Tour in January 2025 at Kai Tak Sports Park and the debut of twin panda cubs at Ocean Park in February, are expected to attract even more Filipino visitors.
As Hong Kong celebrates this milestone, its vibrant streets and world-class entertainment continue to make it a favorite destination for Filipino travelers, who see the city as both a getaway and a second home.
