Iloilo City Councilor Jay Treñas representing Mayor Jerry Treñas together with Engr. Al Fruto of Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), and representative-bicyclists from the different sectors of the Iloilo bike community try the newly installed bike lane on Iloilo Bridge to commemorate World Car Free Day.
The three-meter wide bike lane now connects the Senator Benigno Aquino Jr Avenue bike lane, considered to be the country’s longest protected bike lane, to the Esplanade and University Loop bike lanes.
As more people opt to cycling as a means of mobility during the pandemic, this connectivity will provide more safety and continuity of travel especially to the bike-to-work Ilonggos.
Responding to the DILG-DoTr-DPWH-DOH circular urging local government units to put up pop-up bike lanes due to the surge in bicycle as a mode of transport, the Iloilo City Government in collaboration with DPWH immediately worked on the connectivity of its existing bike lanes.
Bike ramps, signages and bike racks have already been installed and a new bike ordinance is in place. Additional painted bike lanes are expected to be finished in the coming days. (Photo courtesy of Jay Gadong)
