More than 100 community kitchens are set to reopen in the metro to provide food assistance to Ilonggo families affected by the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ).
Iloilo City government will reactivate 135 Uswag Community kitchens to aid 135 barangays with big population needing immediate food assistance.
The 135 barangays were identified by the City Social Welfare and Development Office (CSWDO).
According to Mayor Jerry Treñas, the community kitchens will be manned by volunteers such as daycare workers, feeding program workers, and barangay officials who will prepare, cook, and distribute the meals to the households.
“As we face another wave of challenges because of the Covid-19 pandemic, we have reactivated our USWAG Community Kitchen to continue serving millions of Ilonggo Families. we aim to serve more Ilonggos in these difficult times,” he said in a statement on Tuesday, July 20, 2021.
The community kitchens are not new as the Iloilo City government has successfully established around 240 community kitchens during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic last year.
Community kitchens which were established in day care centers and barangays halls were able to provide 1.9 million free meals to city residents and frontliners last year.
The project was first initiated by the city government in March last year when Iloilo City was first placed under enhanced community quarantine. (ERS)
