Iloilo has been hailed the “most affordable” tourist destination in the Philippines, according to a recent declaration by the booking platform Agoda.

This recognition comes as Agoda released its “Cheapest Destinations” list for Asia, based on booking data from March 1 to 18, 2024.

With an average room rate of $50 or P2,814, Iloilo secured the fifth spot.

It took over the title from Bacolod, which held the position in 2023, as per the online travel agency’s records.

“With many across Asia looking forward to upcoming public holidays like Songkran, Hari Raya, and Golden Week, April and May are a great time to plan a holiday,” Enric Casals, associate vice president at Agoda, said in a statement.

The rich cultural heritage and history of Iloilo have contributed to its flourishing tourism sector.

Natural wonders such as caves and beaches, coupled with the presence of old-world architecture, add to the province’s charm.

Iloilo City, known as the “City of Love” and the “Philippine Wakanda,” boasts significant cultural accolades.

It is the first Creative City of Gastronomy in the Philippines, as designated by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Additionally, the historic district of Calle Real is on the brink of entering the UNESCO World Heritage List, following its recent nomination as part of the Western Visayas (WV) Sugar Heritage Trail.

Among the many tourist attractions in Iloilo is the iconic Miagao Church, built in 1786 by Spanish Augustinian missionaries.

The church is a proud part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site known as the “Baroque Churches of the Philippines.”

Iloilo’s recognition as the “most affordable” tourist destination in the Philippines reflects not only its affordability but also its inherent attractiveness, enriched by its rich culture, heritage, and history.

As travelers seek memorable experiences without breaking the bank, Iloilo emerges as one of the top choices.

Number 1 in Agoda’s list of “most affordable” tourist destinations is Udon Thani in Thailand with an average room rate of $28 or P1,576, followed by Surabaya in Indonesia ($39 or P2,195), Hue in Vietnam ($43 or P2,420), and Kuching in Malaysia ($49 or P2,758).

Bengaluru in India landed in 6th place ($55 or P3,096), followed by Narita in Japan ($71 or P3,996), with Kaohsiung in Taiwan completing the list ($101 or P5,684).
