The Iloilo provincial government is advocating for the creation of an eco-friendly tree park in Barangay Batuan Ilaya, Oton, as part of its broader initiatives to promote environmental sustainability and boost local tourism.

Officials from the Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO), led by PCOL Cornelio Salinas and Dr. Fonz Baldonado, inspected the proposed site on Oct. 3.

Salinas and Baldonado met with Mayor Sofronio Fusin and Malvin Nad of the Oton Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) to assess the location and discuss plans for a tree-planting activity.

The initiative aims to transform the area into a tourist destination while also supporting disaster risk reduction strategies and climate change adaptation efforts.

The proposed tree park, located beside a river, offers a scenic natural backdrop. According to Mayor Fusin, the park is envisioned to include a viewing deck overlooking the river, enhancing its appeal as a tourist attraction.

Dr. Baldonado highlighted the importance of aerial mapping and drone footage in determining the most suitable layout for the park.

This initiative aligns with the TANOM Iloilo program and the MoRProGRes Garden project, both led by Gov. Arthur Defensor Jr.

Salinas assured the full support of the PDRRMO and other MDRRMOs across the province. He introduced the concept of “tree-parenting,” which encourages long-term care for seedlings to ensure their successful growth and survival.

“This initiative aims to create a greener, safer, and more resilient environment for generations to come,” Salinas said.

The project is expected to beautify the area while promoting community responsibility for environmental stewardship.
