The Iloilo River Esplanade received the 2024 Asian Townscape Award (ATA) on November 18 in Fukuoka, Japan, for its exemplary landscape construction and contribution to sustainable urban development.
The award was accepted by Iloilo City Planning and Development Office head Ronald Cartagena.
Spanning over 9 kilometers and connecting five of Iloilo City’s seven districts, the Esplanade is the country’s longest linear park. It comprises 13 sections linked by 11 bridges, with ongoing expansions.
The ATA lauded the project for its harmonious integration with the environment, commitment to safety and sustainability, respect for local culture and history, artistic quality, and contribution to regional development.
The award is an initiative of UN-HABITAT’s Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific and other regional organizations, aiming to promote sustainable urban landscapes in Asia.
Mayor Jerry P. Treñas expressed pride in the accolade, coinciding with Iloilo City’s hosting of the 44th CityNet Executive Committee Meeting from November 18 to 20.
“This achievement is a testament to our unwavering vision and commitment to sustainable urban development—an ethos that Iloilo City has consistently pursued,” Treñas said.
He credited former Ilonggo Senator Franklin Drilon for his pivotal role in the Esplanade’s development, calling it a symbol of Ilonggo pride.
Makati City Mayor Abby Binay, who attended the CityNet meeting, praised Iloilo City’s progressive urban initiatives. Inspired by the Esplanade, Binay announced plans to develop a similar promenade along the Pasig River in Metro Manila.
The CityNet Executive Committee Meeting brought together over 100 urban leaders and stakeholders from across the globe to share ideas on advancing sustainable urban development.
