Touted as one of the most scenic roads built by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), the Iloilo River North Bank Road, also known as the Iloilo Sunset Boulevard, officially opened to the public on Friday, January 24.

The P2.261-billion project spans five kilometers and features a four-lane highway. It starts at Molo-Mandurriao Road, connects to the Iloilo Circumferential Road, and ends at Oton-Pakiad-Mandurriao Road.

The road aims to reduce traffic congestion along the Iloilo-Antique Road and serves as a vital link for regional connectivity. It was partially opened in June 2024, allowing early access during the construction phase.

Former Senator Franklin Drilon, who spearheaded funding for the project, led the ribbon-cutting ceremony alongside Iloilo City Lone District Representative Julienne Baronda, Raisa Treñas-Chu (representing Mayor Jerry Treñas), Vice Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon, and DPWH Regional Assistant Director Al Fruto.

Drilon highlighted the project as an example of how congressional funds can be used transparently for public benefit.

“This project is proof that pork barrel funds, when used with integrity and transparency, can serve as a powerful tool for national and countryside development—not a means to enrich one’s pocket,” he said.

“During my tenure as a senator, I made it a personal mission to ensure that every peso of my allocations would contribute to the development and progress of our country, particularly Iloilo,” he added.

Fruto, speaking on behalf of DPWH Regional Director Sanny Boy Oropel, detailed the road’s features, including solar-powered streetlights, bike lanes, pedestrian walkways, and scenic viewing decks overlooking the river. These decks also provide bird-watching and fishing areas.

“These improvements, coupled with better transportation efficiency, are expected to stimulate local businesses and attract investments, driving economic growth in Iloilo City and nearby areas,” Fruto said.

“The project reflects a forward-thinking approach to urban development by balancing infrastructure needs with environmental sustainability and community well-being, guided by President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr.’s vision of Bagong Pilipinas,” he added.

Raisa Treñas-Chu announced that Sunset Boulevard is now part of the city’s revised Real Property Tax (RPT) incentives for special areas, which includes a five-year incentive program to attract new investors.

Representative Baronda emphasized the collaborative efforts behind the project.

“This road is a testament to the collective efforts of the government and the people. Structures like this may be a great legacy, but the best legacy we can leave is the love and support etched in the hearts of the Ilonggos,” she said.
