The Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology celebrated the groundbreaking of a new multi-purpose sports facility today, heralding a significant development for the province’s Fourth District. The 80-million-worth complex is poised to become a central hub for athletic and recreational activities, serving as a testament to the local government’s commitment to sports and youth development.
Strategically located at the heart of the Fourth District, the facility aims to enhance accessibility and utility for residents across various towns. The sports complex will feature an Olympic-grade oval for track and field events, a grandstand for large-scale outdoor events, a state-of-the-art basketball court capable of hosting national and international tournaments, and an Olympic-sized swimming pool.
The project has garnered substantial support from local leaders, including Cong. Ferj Biron and Gov. Toto Defensor Jr., whose ongoing trust in regional development initiatives has been pivotal. Special thanks were also extended to Mayor BJ Biron of Dumangas, Mayor BP Biron of Barotac Nuevo, and Dr. Nordy Siason, State University President II of ISUFST, all of whom attended the groundbreaking ceremony.
In his remarks, Congressman Jojo Ang emphasized the facility’s strategic placement within the ISUFST campus, ensuring it serves not just Barotacnon but all residents of the Fourth District. “Ang aton sini nga sports facility ginbutang ta sa ISUFST para sentro ini sang fourth district. Indi lang ni siya para sa mga Barotacnon, para ini sa tanan nga mga pumuluyo sang kwatro distrito,” he said.
Ang highlighted the broader benefits of such an investment, noting its potential to recognize and cultivate the skills and talents of Ilonggo athletes. “Naga-invest kita sa mga pareho sini nga facilities kay luyag naton makilala pa gid ang ikasarang kag talento sang mga Ilonggo when it comes to sports. This is our way to support our youth and Ilonggo athletes, indi na nila kilanlan magkadto sa siyudad ukon sa malayo para mag-training kay ang training grounds na ang nagpalapit sa ila,” he added.
Furthermore, Ang pointed out the dual function of the complex as a potential venue for major events and tourism, expanding opportunities not just for city dwellers but for the entire province. “This will also boost our tourism as this will also double as a tourism or events venue, we can now hold big events, concerts kag madamo pa, indi lang sa siyudad kundi even outside of the city. Equal ang opportunities para sa tanan,” he explained.
The sports complex is just one of many projects planned across the province, supported by Gov. Toto Defensor Jr and local district congressmen, aiming to establish at least one similar facility in each district to promote regional growth and equality in access to sports facilities.
