Residents and tourists can now enjoy safer and more convenient travel to natural attractions in San Joaquin, southern Iloilo, with the completion of a concrete access road by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Iloilo 1st District Engineering Office.
The PHP72.3-million project, funded under the 2023 General Appropriations Act (GAA), involved the construction and improvement of a 2.032-kilometer-long, 6.10-meter-wide, two-lane Portland Cement Concrete Pavement (PCCP) access road in Barangay Maninila-Iglilico.
The project also includes concrete slope protection, lined canals, stone masonry in select sections, and the installation of metal guardrails.
Officer-in-Charge District Engineer Ethel B. Morales said the improved road leads to several popular tourism destinations in southern Iloilo.
“The enhanced accessibility will support cultural and environmental preservation by facilitating responsible tourism to Mt. Dalang, as well as to various caves, waterfalls, rice terraces, and the Rafflesia arnoldii, the world’s largest flower,” Morales said.
Regional Director Sanny Boy O. Oropel added that the project will significantly improve access to key tourism areas while promoting local economic growth and sustainable tourism.
“Improved roads will provide safer and more convenient travel for residents and visitors, boosting local businesses and livelihood opportunities,” Oropel said.
The road improvement is expected to elevate San Joaquin as one of the premier tourist destinations in the province, further enhancing local tourism and socio-economic development.
