Improved Access Roads Boost Southern Iloilo Economy, Tourism

Improved access roads in Miag-ao, Iloilo, are set to drive local tourism and economic growth following the completion of two major infrastructure projects by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) Iloilo 1st District Engineering Office.

The ₱14.7-million project in Barangay Potrido and Barangay Alimodias focused on constructing and improving the Malagyan-Tigmalapad Road, which leads to Sinuhotan Cave and Tinagong Dagat Lake. The project involved a 6.7-meter by 280-meter concrete road with shoulders on both sides, a rotunda, concrete-lined canals, slope protection in selected areas, and pavement markings.

Meanwhile, the ₱71.6-million project enhanced the Barangay Potrido to Barangay Alimodias Road, providing better access to tourism spots such as Bugsukan and Banogon Falls and Miag-ao’s 500-hectare rice terraces. This included constructing a 6.10-meter by 2,285-meter concrete road, divided into two sections: section one with 840 lineal meters and section two with 1,445 lineal meters. The road features concrete-lined canals, slope protection, box culverts, and vegetation.

OIC-District Engineer Ethel B. Morales reported to Regional Director Sanny Boy O. Oropel that these infrastructure improvements will support the growing tourism industry and ensure safer, more convenient travel for visitors.

“The construction of these access roads is crucial for promoting sustainable tourism in Miag-ao. By providing smoother and safer routes, we are enhancing the travel experience for tourists while also encouraging local businesses and creating opportunities for the communities in the area,” Oropel said.

The completion of these projects reflects DPWH’s commitment to improving infrastructure and fostering economic growth through sustainable tourism. With these new roads, Miag-ao’s natural attractions are now more accessible, paving the way for a brighter future in the local tourism sector.
