Intellectual Property registrations surge in PHL amidst increased copyright awareness

In a landmark achievement for intellectual property rights in the Philippines, the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) reported an unprecedented surge in copyright registrations in 2023.

The total number of registrations climbed to 6,522, marking a staggering 76% increase compared to the previous year.

The majority of these registrations, amounting to over half at 52.6%, fell within the literary domain, encompassing books, pamphlets, articles, e-books, audio books, comics, novels, and other writings.

This was closely followed by registrations for audiovisual and cinematographic works, which accounted for 18.1% of the total, and computer programs, software, games, and applications, at 8.8%.

Director General Rowel S. Barba attributed this record-high to IPOPHL’s vigorous efforts to raise awareness about the critical nature of copyright protection.

He stressed that while copyright is inherently granted upon a work’s creation, obtaining a registration certificate furnishes an additional layer of security.

“Although copyright protection is provided automatically upon creation, registration certificates provide an added layer of protection to copyrighted works,” Barba added.

Emerson G. Cuyo, Director of the Bureau of Copyright and Related Rights (BCRR), announced plans to further enhance copyright education in the country.

The bureau aims to expand its outreach through roadshows and the further development of its Copyright Plus Program, which aims to bolster projects supporting underrepresented artists.

Cuyo also highlighted the ease and importance of online copyright registration, urging creatives to take advantage of this system to protect their work efficiently and confidently.

“In just a few clicks and just a few days, you can safeguard your works and navigate the future with greater confidence over the ownership of your works. Make the wise decision of registering today rather than regretting not having given your works enough protection,” Cuyo added.

In his feedback, a representative of the registrant emphasized the importance of copyright registration, noting that the official recognition from a certificate “signifies not only a legal acknowledgment but also a celebration of [one’s] dedication, passion, and unwavering commitment to his art.”

Another registrant, an IP advocate and private law practitioner, commended the “convenient, simplified and systematic” registration process and the staff who were “proactive in advising and guiding the applicants during the entire process.”

Feedback from the community has been overwhelmingly positive.

One registrant underscored the significance of an official registration certificate as a legal and symbolic recognition of an artist’s commitment and passion.

Another, an IP advocate, and a private law practitioner lauded the IPOPHL for its streamlined, user-friendly process and proactive assistance provided to applicants.

“The BCCR’s streamlined recordal and deposit system is definitely a great help to the IP community,” the registrant added.
