ISUFST Faculty Present STEM Innovations at UP Conference

Two faculty members from the Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) showcased their groundbreaking research at the International Conference on STEM Education (ICSTEM) held on November 21–23 at the University of the Philippines Diliman.

Themed “Advancing STEM Education through Emerging Technologies, Innovative Pedagogies, and Responsive Curricula,” the conference brought together educators and researchers from countries including Australia, Japan, the US, and the Philippines to discuss leadership, technology, and curriculum changes shaping STEM education globally.

Dr. Herman Lagon of ISUFST’s College of Education presented his study, “Integrating ChatGPT in Math Education: A Narrative Inquiry into Mathematical Investigation, Mathematical Modeling, and Mathematical Discovery.”

His research explored how artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT can enhance student engagement and problem-solving skills.

“AI-driven tools offer dynamic and interactive learning experiences, equipping students with critical thinking skills and a strong sense of agency essential for today’s digital world,” Dr. Lagon said.

“These tools also free up teachers to provide personalized and individualized instruction, making learning more impactful,” he added.

Joining him was chemistry teacher John Mark Burila, who presented his study, “Musichemistry: Effects on Learners’ Motivation, Engagement, and Proficiency in Chemistry.”

Burila’s work examined how incorporating music into chemistry lessons can make abstract concepts more accessible and engaging, improving both student motivation and comprehension.

“Musichemistry transforms abstract ideas into relatable and enjoyable lessons,” Burila explained.

“It’s incredibly fulfilling to see students connect challenging concepts to real-life applications, approaching learning with curiosity and enthusiasm,” he added.

ISUFST President Dr. Nordy Siason Jr. lauded the faculty members for their achievements, which align with the university’s vision of becoming a leading research institution in fisheries, agriculture, education, and technology in Southeast Asia by 2030.

“Our faculty’s participation in ICSTEM in UP Diliman exemplifies our dedication to excellence and commitment to contributing to the global conversation on advancing STEM education,” Dr. Siason said.

The three-day ICSTEM conference, hosted by the UP National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (UP NISMED) in celebration of its 60th anniversary, focused on collaborative solutions to global challenges in STEM education, from curriculum reform to sustainability.

Dr. Lagon and Mr. Burila’s participation highlighted ISUFST’s commitment to research-driven innovation and underscored the institution’s efforts to create transformative educational experiences for students.
