The Iloilo State University of Fisheries Science and Technology (ISUFST) is preparing to introduce micro-credential programs designed to bridge academic learning with industry needs, following a successful two-day workshop in Iloilo City.
Dr. Greg Pawilen, a curriculum expert from the University of the Philippines Los Baños, praised ISUFST’s initiatives during the event held at Park Inn by Radisson, describing the proposals as “among the first, cleanest, and finest” he has encountered.
“I urge the management to launch these at the soonest possible time,” Pawilen said, emphasizing the potential impact of the programs in addressing evolving educational and industry requirements.
Micro-credentials are compact, competency-based courses tailored to equip learners with practical, industry-aligned skills. These programs prioritize flexibility, inclusivity, and outcomes-based education.
“Tomorrow’s curriculum must be transformative, adaptable, and serve practical needs beyond traditional exams and classroom settings,” Pawilen remarked.
During the workshop, participants from six colleges, including Education, Information Technology, Management, Agriculture, and Fisheries, developed proposals for courses in areas such as psychological first aid, robotics programming, maritime leadership, AI-driven content creation, and integrated farming.
Reflecting on the innovative nature of the workshop, ISUFST Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Joan Belga said, “Through these micro-credentials, we’re enabling students to gain skills they can immediately apply, making them invaluable contributors to the community.”
Dr. Michelle Bales, ISUFST’s Director of Instruction, announced plans to propose formalizing policies for micro-credentialing, aiming to introduce the programs in the next academic year.
The event highlighted ISUFST’s commitment to educational innovation and its proactive approach to meeting the demands of the labor market.
As Pawilen concluded, “Major players are those who respond to needs through curricular innovations like micro-credentialing, allowing ISUFST to meet its clients’ needs with precision and impact.”
The initiative is expected to position ISUFST at the forefront of education reform, equipping students with skills that align with the dynamic needs of industries in the Philippines and beyond. (Photos by Catherine Tagnawa and Herman Lagon/Text by Lagon/PAMMCO)
