Kid, senior citizen drown on New Year’s Day

BACOLOD City – Two persons, including a child, died after they drowned in separate areas in Negros Occidental on New Year’s Day, January 1.

In Hinoba-an town, a celebration of New Year’s Day became tragic when a five-year-old girl drowned in a swimming pool in a resort at Purok 2, Barangay Alim.

Police Captain Jaime Dequillo Jr., deputy chief of Hinoba-an Municipal Police Station, said the victim, whose name was withheld, went swimming with her relatives during a family outing when they failed to notice her transferring to another pool.

Dequillo said that some people tried to revive the victim until she was taken to a hospital, but she was declared dead.

Meanwhile, in Manapla town, a 65-year-old man also drowned in a resort in Barangay Tortosa later that night.

The victim was found by his live-in partner lifeless along the seashore. Police said there was no foul play in the incident.
