A 10-year-old legless swimmer from Cadiz City, Negros Occidental, has once again showcased his exceptional talent at the Palarong Pambansa 2024, securing two gold medals and one silver.
Zach Lucas Obsioma, who was born with a rare phocomelia disease, won gold in both the 50-meter backstroke and 50-meter freestyle events in the boys’ amputee category of the Para Games.
He also earned a silver medal in the 50-meter breaststroke. This victory marks another milestone for Obsioma, who began his swimming journey just last year.
Max Fermales and Lyn Rabuya, who coach the young athlete, have played a pivotal role in his rapid progress.
Training at Laura’s Beach Resort in Cadiz, Obsioma’s dedication and hard work paid off when he first competed in the Provincial Meet at Panaad Park and Stadium in Bacolod last March. His triumph there propelled him to the Palarong Pambansa 2023 in Marikina City, where he won three gold medals.
In May, Obsioma continued his streak of success at the Western Visayas Regional Athletic Association (WVRAA) Meet held at St. John’s Institute – Ayala Campus in Talisay City, further establishing himself as a formidable swimmer.
Cadiz Mayor Salvador Escalante, Jr. expressed immense pride in Obsioma’s achievements. “For two years now, Zach never failed to give us honor despite his physical disability,” Escalante said. “Zach is truly an inspiration among Cadiznons and Negrosanons as well.”
Obsioma, a Grade 5 student at the Special Education (SPED) – Cadiz Center, has become a beacon of hope and determination in his community. His journey from a young boy with a dream to a celebrated athlete serves as a testament to the power of perseverance and the support of a dedicated community.
