Local farmers embrace new strategies at JGF forum

Smallholder farmers across the country are better equipped to handle evolving agricultural challenges, thanks to the Jollibee Group Foundation’s (JGF) Journey to Growth Forum. The forum brought together farmers, cooperatives, local government units, and industry experts to explore innovative farming techniques, market adaptability, and strategic planning.

The Journey to Growth Forum, part of JGF’s Farmer Entrepreneurship Program (FEP), aims to empower farmers by enhancing their strategic mindset and providing them with the tools to improve their farming operations. Through dynamic learning sessions, focus group discussions, and workshops, farmers were introduced to the latest industry trends and agri-innovations, helping them navigate the increasingly competitive agricultural landscape.

“The Journey to Growth Forum not only strengthened our relationship with partner farmers but also provided an ideal avenue for them to learn best practices and discover solutions to existing farming challenges,” said JGF President Gisela Tiongson. “We hope to aid our farmers in achieving sustainable growth by continuously providing workshops and training on leading-edge and innovative approaches.”

Agri-Innovation and Expert Insights

Industry experts at the forum delivered vital information aimed at improving farmers’ resilience and productivity. Miguel Garcia of the Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation (PDRF) spoke about preparing for potential climate shifts, particularly the forecasted La Niña, while Dr. Dionisio Bucao from Mariano Marcos State University emphasized the importance of soil health in sustainable farming. Meanwhile, Arjay Aquino from Central Luzon State University shared practical strategies for soil health restoration, ensuring farmers adopt sustainable practices.

These insights, along with guidance from Jollibee Group’s global divisions in procurement, finance, sustainability, and risk management, gave participants a comprehensive overview of how they can enhance operational efficiency and financial strength in their agro-entrepreneurship journey.

Onion Business Planning: A Key Focus

The forum also featured the Onion Business Planning (OBP) session, a core activity in JGF’s ongoing support for smallholder farmers. The OBP allows farmers to update business strategies, track progress, and refine their production methods.

In 2023, smallholder farmers participating in FEP supplied 24% of Jollibee Group’s onion requirements, a figure projected to rise to 33% in 2024. “We’re targeting 2,000 tons of onions for 2024. We’re only halfway through the year, but we have already reached 90% of our goal,” said William Tan Untiong, Jollibee Group’s Global Chief Business Support Officer.

Since its inception in 2009, FEP farmer groups have delivered over 11 million kilos of quality vegetables to Jollibee Group, representing more than PHP500 million in sales. In 2023 alone, FEP farmers delivered 1.37 million kilos of produce, underscoring the program’s success in fostering agro-enterprises and economic resilience.

Empowering Farmers for Sustainable Growth

As climate change, technological advancements, and rising consumer expectations reshape the agricultural landscape, JGF continues to empower smallholder farmers to remain competitive. Through training and workshops, JGF ensures that farmers can not only keep pace with these changes but also leverage new opportunities.

“By helping farmers thrive as agro-entrepreneurs, we’re not just enabling them to provide for their families; we’re contributing to the overall resilience and sustainability of the agricultural sector,” added Tiongson.

The forum’s success highlights the importance of collaboration, innovation, and continuous learning in securing the future of Filipino farmers in a challenging global market.
