Magbaboy Bridge expansion enhances regional connectivity

The expansion of the Magbaboy Bridge along Bacolod North Road in Barangay Buluangan, San Carlos City, Negros Occidental, strengthens the link between the provinces of Occidental and Oriental Negros.

The Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) undertook the expansion to improve the flow of traffic and the movement of people, goods, and services.

Managed by the DPWH Negros Occidental Sub District Engineering Office, this ₱32-million project doubled the bridge’s capacity to four lanes, complementing the existing four-lane roadway. The project includes the addition of two Reinforced Concrete Deck Girder (RCDG) spans to meet increasing traffic needs and enhance safety and convenience.

“The enhancement of Magbaboy Bridge is pivotal in boosting regional road infrastructure, simplifying the movement of residents, and facilitating the delivery of public services. It stimulates the local economy and fosters connections between communities,” said Regional Director Sanny Boy O. Oropel.

He added, “With this expansion, we’re seeing stronger links among suppliers, consumers, and marketplaces, opening up more economic prospects and broadening access to vital services.”

Officer-in-Charge District Engineer Juan Alfonso G. Jorbina, Jr. commented on the strategic importance of the bridge.

“Situated on the national highway, the bridge is essential for managing increasing traffic volumes, enabling smoother transit, and ensuring safety.”

Jorbina, Jr. also highlighted the bridge’s design, which pays homage to its historical American-era roots, including a 42-meter expansion and a 170-meter road approach on both sides, complete with railings that echo the historical significance of the area.

“This bridge serves as a vital connection in the delivery if goods and services, bridging the way for communities to better access to resources. With this, efficient transportation is ensured to improve the quality of life of people in cities and provinces,” DE Jorbina, Jr. said.

“Inspired by old American era bridge design, this 42-meter bridge widening project includes the construction of 170-meter road approach on both abutments and installation of railings that captures the essence of the historical roots of the place,” DE Jorbina added.

This project promotes seamless travel, endorses historical appreciation, and transforms the infrastructure to be more robust and sustainable, in alignment with modern requirements. (DPWH)
