BACOLOD CITY – A 38-year-old man drowned after jumping into the sea at the San Carlos City seaport, Negros Occidental, on Sunday.

Commander Jansen Benjamin, head of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG)-northern Negros Occidental, said a security guard saw the victim walking toward the edge of the port at around 12:08 p.m. However, the guard did not anticipate that the man would jump into the water.

Coast Guard personnel responded within 10 minutes and rescued the victim, whose name has been withheld. Despite their efforts, the man was declared dead at a hospital at 12:44 p.m.

Before the incident, Benjamin said the victim was seen purchasing a ticket for a 1 p.m. trip to Toledo, Cebu.

The depth of the water where the victim jumped is approximately 12 meters, Benjamin noted.

It remains unclear why the man jumped, as his family has not provided any information.
