A laborer remains at large after allegedly hacking his younger brother to death at their family home in Maasin, Iloilo, early on August 29.
Jose Teddy Montefrio fled after attacking his younger brother, 46-year-old Juliano Montefrio, at around 1:30 a.m. Thursday at Barangay Abilay, a remote village about 12 kilometers from Maasin town.
According to reports, the two brothers had been drinking with their respective friends hours before the incident.
Major Jose Nemias Pamplona, Maasin police chief, said the brothers encountered each other later at their parents’ house.
“They had a fight. We just can’t figure out the reason for their argument. Since both were already under the influence of liquor, emotions flared up,” Pamplona said.
Their father, who was on the ground floor of the house, reported hearing a heated argument between the brothers, who were on the second floor.
When he rushed upstairs, he found Juliano lying on the floor.
The victim sustained multiple hack wounds on different parts of his body.
Pamplona said the incident was reported to the police several hours later.
Investigators, along with a representative from the Rural Health Unit, arrived at the scene and confirmed the victim’s death.
Pamplona added that the police have received surrender feelers from the suspect.
