BACOLOD City – A misunderstanding led to the death of a man who was shot by his brother-in-law inside their house in Barangay Paghumayan, Calatrava, Negros Occidental last Tuesday.

The victim was identified as Gilbert Claro, 37.

Police Captain Jesus Alba, deputy chief of Calatrava Municipal Police Station, said the victim and his sister figured into an argument when the latter told her brother to stop meddling in the life of their younger sister.

When 29-year-old Reymart Cabriana, who is the husband of the victim’s sister saw them, he intervened, Alba said. This irked Claro until he figured into a heated argument with Cabriana, he added.

“Naghangkatanay sila nga duwa,” Alba said.

Cabriana then allegedly shot Claro, hitting him in the head and body, Alba said.

Claro was declared dead at a hospital due to five gunshot wounds, according to Alba.

Alba said that Cabriana surrendered to the police with the help of the barangay officials five hours after the incident happened.

However, he failed to surrender the .45 caliber firearm that was allegedly used.

Alba said the victim and the suspect, as well as the victim’s siblings, would usually argue at their house.

Alba said the suspect will be released from police custody if no charges will be filed against him within the 36-hour reglementary detention.
