ROXAS CITY, Capiz — A 25-year-old man surrendered to Sapian police on Thursday afternoon, September 19, admitting responsibility for the murder of his 71-year-old grandmother in Sitio Bulon, Barangay Bilao, Sapian, Capiz, on September 10.
Bilao Barangay Kagawad Homer Olaso said the suspect, known as “Toto,” voluntarily went to the Sapian police station and confessed to killing his grandmother, Deonilla Doroteo, on the evening of September 10, 2024.
According to the suspect, the crime occurred after Doroteo refused to lend him money and instead berated him, which provoked him to kill her.
He said he was tormented by guilt, prompting him to surrender to the authorities.
Initially, police suspected robbery and rape as possible motives behind the crime, as Doroteo was alone at home when the incident happened.
Police responding to the scene discovered a flashlight, underwear, and a pair of shorts, believed to belong to the victim, near the bamboo gate of her home.
Doroteo’s body was found near the door, lying in a pool of blood, with a fatal head wound. She also had hematomas on the lower part of her breast.
Inside the house, some of Doroteo’s personal belongings were in disarray.
Police also found two live chickens with their feet tied, which they believe may have been brought by unidentified individuals.
WOMAN SHOT DEAD WHILE MEDIATING DISPUTE
Meanwhile, a 68-year-old woman was fatally shot while trying to mediate a conflict between a father and son on Saturday evening, September 21, at Sitio Mantawad, Barangay Malag-it, Pontevedra, Capiz.
Josefina Asong was declared dead on arrival at Bailan District Hospital after being shot by 46-year-old Jovannie Abulocion Catalan, both residents of the area.
According to the investigation by Pontevedra police, the suspect and his son were involved in an argument inside Asong’s home when she intervened to try to resolve the issue.
Catalan, who was holding an unidentified firearm, attempted to shoot his son, but instead hit Asong in the chest.
Authorities recovered an empty shell from an unknown caliber at the scene, while the suspect fled in an unknown direction.
Police are conducting a hot pursuit operation to arrest Catalan, who is reportedly related to the victim.
