Manila Port welcomes first LNG-powered green ship

The Manila International Container Terminal (MICT) marked a significant milestone on September 26, welcoming its first-ever liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered container vessel, the CMA CGM Passion.

The 7,327 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) vessel, operated by CNC under its KCS service, arrived as part of its regular route connecting ports in South China, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

The arrival of CMA CGM Passion represents a critical step in MICT’s efforts to reduce its environmental footprint.

“This landmark call reinforces our efforts to reduce the environmental impact of MICT’s operations, which include investing in hybrid rubber-tired gantries that require less fuel and generate cleaner emissions,” said Christian Lozano, MICT’s chief operating officer.

The terminal has been recognized for its sustainability efforts by the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation Port Services Network, having achieved green port status. This recognition follows MICT’s commitment to sustainable practices, including improved wastewater management, circular economy strategies, and biodiversity protection.

Green Ship Pushes Decarbonization Goals

CMA CGM Passion’s use of LNG is key to decarbonizing the shipping industry, as LNG produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions compared to traditional marine fuels.

LNG is a cleaner-burning alternative, releasing less sulfur and particulate matter into the atmosphere, which helps combat climate change.

This vessel is the largest container ship ever to dock at MICT, further positioning the terminal as a competitive player in international trade.

The MICT is fully equipped to handle large container ships, providing enhanced connectivity for Philippine imports and exports.

The KCS service, operated by CNC, provides direct sailings between key Asian ports, including Xingang, Dalian, Lianyungang, Qingdao, Singapore, Jakarta, Surabaya, and Manila.

Its route offers one of the fastest transit times from Qingdao to Singapore and Indonesia, making it an important service for the region’s trade network.

Strengthening Global Trade Connectivity

MICT, the flagship terminal of International Container Terminal Services, Inc. (ICTSI), plays a crucial role in the Philippines’ economic development by facilitating stronger trade links.

The ability to handle green ships like CMA CGM Passion will not only enhance environmental sustainability but also promote the Port of Manila’s standing as a globally competitive hub.

“Handling more green ships is part of the industry’s shift toward decarbonization. This is a future we’re ready for,” Lozano added.
