Iloilo City Mayor Jerry Treñas announced on Wednesday, October 9, that he will return to city hall as soon as possible as he recovers from a recent medical operation.
In a statement, Treñas assured the public that he is “doing well” and “on the path to a full recovery.”
He added that although he wishes to return to work, his doctors have advised him to focus on recovery before resuming his duties.
“I deeply appreciate the concern and prayers from everyone, especially as I work towards regaining my strength,” Treñas said.
“If it were up to me, I would already be back to work. However, following my doctor’s advice, I need to take some time to fully recover before returning to my duties as Mayor of Iloilo City. Rest assured, I will be back very soon, ready to continue serving the people of our beloved city,” he added.
In an October 3 statement, the mayor revealed that he had undergone a bile duct operation, after earlier reports suggested he was undergoing a routine semi-annual checkup.
In the same statement, Treñas also announced that he would not run in the 2025 elections and endorsed his daughter and executive assistant, Raisa Treñas-Chu, as his successor.
His spokesperson, Joy Fantilaga, declined to disclose the exact details of his condition and told Daily Guardian on October 3 that more information would be provided when the mayor resumes his duties.
Vice Mayor Jeffrey Ganzon has been acting mayor since September 28, following City Administrator Melchor Tan, who served as officer-in-charge until September 27.
