Meat, rice, veggies push food inflation for all-income households in Guimaras to 10.1%

Higher price changes in food items – especially in the three major food groups, Meat and Other Parts of Slaughtered Land Animals; Rice; and Vegetables, Tubers, Cooking Bananas, and Pulses – drove Guimaras’ food inflation for all income households quicker to 10.1 percent in September 2023, from 7.6 percent a month ago.

This is based on the latest price statistics of the Philippines Statistics Authority (PSA).

“Meat and other parts of slaughtered land animals (ND) with 8.1% inflation, contributed 42.7%; Rice with 11.2% inflation chipped in 38.2%; and Vegetables, tubers, plantains, cooking bananas and pulses (ND) with 40.6% inflation added 19.0% in the September 2023 Food Inflation’s Trend in Guimaras,” Provincial Statistics Officer Nelida B. Losare said.

The other six food items slowed their price movement from August to September 2023: Fish and other seafood (ND) at 1.9% from 2.6%; Milk, other dairy products and eggs (ND) at 10.7% from 12.0%; Oils and fats (ND) at 4.5% from 14.3%; Fruits and nuts (ND) at 3.9% from 5.8%; Sugar, confectionery and desserts (ND) at 6.3% from 10.0%; and Ready-made food and other food products N.E.C. (ND) at 14.0% from 14.4%.

When focusing on low-income households’ inflation rate alone, rice is the number one contributor to food inflation trend for the bottom 30% household income bracket.

Rice with 11.2 percent inflation significantly occupied 40.36% of the latest food inflation for low-income households in Guimaras,” Losare said.

“It then followed by the Meat and other parts of slaughtered land animals (ND) with 8.9 % inflation; and Vegetables, tubers, plantains, cooking bananas and pulses (ND) with 40.1%  inflation, contributed 30.5 and 17.23 percent, respectively.”

Fish and other seafood (ND) also noted an essential portion of 11.6% to the rising trend for the bottom 30% income households’ inflation.

Tthe other five food items showed a sluggish movement on their annual price increase: Milk, other dairy products and eggs (ND) at 11.3% from 12.5%; Oils and fats (ND) at 8.5% from 24.5%; Fruits and nuts (ND) at  3.1% from 5.4%; Sugar, confectionery and desserts (ND) at 6.6% from 11.5%; and Ready-made food and other food products n.e.c. (ND) at 17.5% from 18.4%.
