Meralco, Samsung Partner to Explore Nuclear Energy

The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with South Korean firm Samsung C&T Corporation to explore nuclear energy development in the Philippines.

Meralco Executive Vice President and COO Ronnie L. Aperocho said the partnership will help Meralco understand nuclear energy’s critical aspects. “This aligns well with Meralco’s continuous efforts to work with global knowledge and technology partners to help us in our transition towards more diversified and sustainable energy sources,” Aperocho said.

Under the MOU, Meralco and Samsung C&T will exchange insights on nuclear technology’s technical design, regulatory requirements, and grid infrastructure needs.

The companies will also evaluate the feasibility of a pilot demonstration project and consider future nuclear power plant developments.

This collaboration comes after an agreement between the Philippines and South Korea to conduct a feasibility study on reviving the Bataan Nuclear Power Plant.

Samsung C&T aims to contribute to the development of large-scale nuclear power plants and Small Modular Reactor (SMR) projects in the country.

Meralco Chairman and CEO Manuel V. Pangilinan said, “Our collaboration with Samsung C&T is a strategic move that cements our commitment to take an active role in contributing to the Philippine government’s efforts to integrate nuclear energy in the country’s future power supply mix.”

Pangilinan emphasized Meralco’s commitment to ensuring energy security while supporting the country’s goal of sustainable and inclusive growth.
