BACOLOD CITY – A 27-year-old woman was fatally hacked by her father in Barangay Rafaela Barrera, Sagay City, Negros Occidental, following a misunderstanding last Wednesday.
The names of both the victim and the 51-year-old suspect, a fisherman, have been withheld by authorities. Police Lieutenant Hannah Banquil, deputy chief of Sagay City Police Station, reported that the altercation began when the suspect chastised his two grandchildren, who were playing with water, and his daughter intervened.
“A heated argument ensued between the victim and her father, who was under the influence of liquor at the time,” Banquil explained.
The dispute escalated when the suspect, armed with a bolo, followed and allegedly attacked his daughter as she left the scene. She later died from multiple hack wounds. The bolo believed to have been used in the attack was recovered with its scabbard at the scene.
The suspect surrendered to police shortly after the incident. “He claimed it was not his intention to kill his daughter, but he was angry at the time,” Banquil noted.
The family had a history of misunderstandings, which may have contributed to the severity of the argument and subsequent attack.
Parricide charges were filed against the fisherman the following day.
