After several schools dissolved their varsity teams as cost-cutting measures amid the COVID-19 pandemic, the NCAA board plans to just launch 4 sporting events in the upcoming Season 96.
Hercules Callanta, Lyceum of the Philippines University athletics director, confirmed that the NCAA is planning to only hold basketball, volleyball, swimming, and track and field if ever Season 96 will push through.
However, the board is also exploring options such as online sports with the majority of NCAA schools shifting to the online platform of learning.
“The NCAA has to be able to look at some alternatives such as suspending first the traditional sports events, and possibly coming up with events that can be played as exhibition or well, over the internet,” said Callanta.
However, things are still uncertain if Season 96 will push through and the NCAA board is still doing their best to adjust the guidelines to the schools that are observing cost-cutting measures.
“First and foremost, the NCAA will not make it difficult for the member institution, who is already hard-pressed to participate, even in just one tournament, or in one competition,” added Callanta.
