BACOLOD CITY — Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson reaffirmed the provincial government’s commitment to supporting women and their families during the opening of the 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women (VAW) on Monday.

The program, held at Nature’s Village Resort in Talisay City, was led by the Provincial Council for Women in collaboration with the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO).

“We will continue to effectively utilize our Gender and Development budget and other resources to improve the lives of women and reach out to the younger generation, who are the future of our province,” Lacson said.

He urged both men and women to unite in creating a brighter future for survivors of violence against women, highlighting the importance of male involvement.

“This year, we aim to amplify our efforts by engaging more men in this advocacy. Their involvement as allies, protectors, and advocates is crucial in fostering a culture of respect and equality,” he added.

Lacson explained that the annual campaign raises awareness about violence against women and children, advocates for their rights, and provides information on laws and resources to safeguard them from abuse.

Board Member Rita Gatuslao, Provincial Gender and Development (GAD) Action Officer Marie June Castro, Provincial Council for Women Chair Andrea Lizares-Si, and PSWDO Head Chiqui Gonzales were among the officials present at the event.

In Moises Padilla, Mayor Ella Celestina D. Garcia-Yulo emphasized women’s ability to overcome challenges through hard work and prayer.

The municipality marked the campaign’s first day with a flag ceremony led by Barangay Violence Against Women (BVAW) representatives, headed by Municipal Social Welfare and Development Officer (MSWDO) Kersey Sumadhay, alongside LGU employees.

Mayor Garcia-Yulo encouraged women to remain brave and determined in fighting for their rights.

In La Castellana, Mayor Alme Rhummyla G. Nicor-Mangilimutan officially launched the campaign with the theme “End VAW Now: It’s Time.” The initiative runs from Nov. 25 to Dec. 12, 2024, and focuses on eradicating violence against women while supporting the women’s sector.

The 18-Day Campaign to End Violence Against Women is part of a national effort to raise awareness and promote advocacy against abuse.
