BACOLOD CITY – Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson called for a systematic change and a rethinking of how people produce, consume and manage plastics.

The governor issued the call during the 33rd Provincial Environment Month celebration, themed “Ending Plastic Pollution,” held at the Social Hall of the provincial capitol on Monday, June 9, 2025.

Lacson said plastic pollution is not merely an issue of poor waste disposal but a crisis that affects biodiversity, public health, food systems and the climate.

He emphasized that ending plastic pollution requires more than good intentions—it demands the courage to shift from convenience to responsibility.

He also called for stronger collaboration among local government units, educational institutions, civic groups and private sector partners to enforce stricter environmental policies, promote sustainable alternatives and incentivize innovative solutions.

“Most importantly, let us cultivate a culture where every Negrense understands that protecting the environment is not someone else’s job—it is our shared duty,” he said.

The celebration also featured the first-ever KapitAlam Environmental Quiz Bowl (Brgy. Kapitolyo Edition).

Negros Occidental Provincial Administrator Atty. Rayfrando Diaz, who was with the governor, also expressed his full support for the province’s environmental protection efforts and its impactful initiatives to preserve natural resources.

Also present at the celebration were DENR-PENRO Negros Occidental Head Joan Nathaniel Gerangaya and representatives from partner agencies.

The event was spearheaded by the Provincial Environment Management Office, led by Atty. Julie Ann Bedrio, who also urged continued support for Environment Month activities in coordination with LGUs across the province.

Also lined up for the celebration are tree planting, mangrove growing and cleanup drives.

More localized activities are scheduled across various LGUs as part of the monthlong observance.
