NHCP visits Northern Samar, conducts site visit of heritage churches

CATARMAN, NORTHERN SAMAR – The National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP), led by its Chair Regalado Trota Jose Jr. with Commissioners Ma. Eloisa de Castro and Francis Navarro visited the province of Northern Samar in line with the commemoration of the 350th death anniversary of Francisco Ignacio Alcina, SJ on 30-31 July 2024.

The NHCP delegation paid a courtesy call with Northern Samar Governor Edwin Marino C. Ongchuan at the Governor’s residence in Catarman.

Jose and Ongchuan discussed the various historic and heritage sites in the province for possible marking and recognition as well as other avenues for collaboration between the national and local governments.

The NHCP delegation also made visits in the towns of Pambujan and Catubig and met with their respective chief executives, Mayor Felipe Sosing of Pambujan, and Mayor Solomon Vicencio of Catubig.

Both towns are home to two 18th century churches recognized by the provincial government as significant heritage sites.

The NHCP delegation had a dinner meeting with Palapag Mayor Florencio “Fawa” A. Batula to discuss the details of the unveiling of the historical marker “Padre Francisco Ignacio Alcina, SJ” at the old Palapag Church ruins on 30 July 2024.

The NHCP is the national government agency mandated to promote Philippine history through its museums, research, and publications, and to preserve historical heritage through conservation and the marking of historic sites and structures.
