The expected filing of charges against three suspects in the rape-slay of a Slovakian tourist in Boracay may be delayed.
DNA samples collected from the body of Michaela Mickova did not match those of the two suspects currently in police custody.
Brig. Gen. Jack Wanky, Western Visayas police chief, said no semen was recovered from Mickova’s body due to decomposition.
“The only samples collected were from her fingernails, which did not match the two suspects,” he said.
However, Wanky said they are not ruling out the possibility that the DNA might match the third person of interest.
With this development, Wanky said they would temporarily suspend filing charges and continue building the case.
“Hopefully, we could find more witnesses to solidify the case,” he said.
While the Special Investigation Task Group has initial witnesses, Wanky said they need more concrete evidence to form an airtight case.
“We don’t want to rush things and risk dismissal later,” he added.
Earlier, one of the three persons of interest in Mickova’s death gave an extra-judicial confession, admitting knowledge of the crime.
Alias Mik, 28, a resident of Boracay Island, identified his friends, alias Jelo and alias JR, as the ones who raped and killed Mickova.
Mik was arrested during a drug buy-bust operation on March 14, two days after Mickova’s body was found inside an abandoned chapel in Zone 3, Sitio Pinaungon, Barangay Balabag, Boracay.
He was later charged with violating Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
Mik said guilt over Mickova’s fate compelled him to speak out during detention.
He claimed it was Jelo who knew the victim and that they met her in front of a hotel before heading to the abandoned chapel.
Jelo allegedly led the way, holding the woman’s wrist.
At first, Mickova did not resist, but she tried to break free when they reached the chapel.
Mik said he was looking at his phone when he heard a loud smack.
To his shock, he saw JR holding a piece of wood, which he used to strike Mickova on the back of the head.
JR allegedly hit her twice more, causing her to lose consciousness and collapse.
The two men carried Mickova inside the chapel and placed her on the cement floor.
Mik said he left the scene while the two others allegedly raped the victim.
While Mik was arrested for a drug-related offense, another suspect was apprehended for illegal possession of a firearm.
