BACOLOD CITY – A 57-year-old overseas Filipino worker (OFW) died while rescuing his 12-year-old son from drowning at sea in Barangay 2, Sipalay City, Negros Occidental, on Friday.
The victim, a native of La Union and a British citizen, had returned to the Philippines for a vacation.
Police Master Sgt. Ricky Yanson Jr., case investigator of the Sipalay City Police Station, said the victim and his family were swimming at the beach when the tragedy occurred.
The victim’s son was swept by strong waves into a deeper part of the sea, prompting the father to attempt a rescue. However, the strong current overwhelmed him.
Local fisherfolk called for help from the Sipalay Rescue Team.
Yanson said the child was successfully rescued by the family, but the father was unable to survive.
