Local officials and residents of Barangay General Delgado in New Lucena, Iloilo, now benefit from a more conducive and spacious venue for public service and community activities with the new multipurpose building provided by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Iloilo 4th District Engineering Office.

The ₱4.9-million project, funded under the FY 2023 Basic Infrastructure Program (BIP), involves the construction of a two-story building measuring 12 meters by 9.5 meters. This facility will support barangay officials in delivering quality services more effectively and efficiently.

The project includes a water tank, necessary ventilation, electrical and sanitary amenities, finishing works on the perimeter, and a concrete bleacher to ensure the safety and convenience of the occupants.

DPWH 6 Regional Director Sanny Boy O. Oropel emphasized that the building will provide local officials with conducive working spaces and a multifunction area for various community activities.

“This new building offers a better working environment for local officials, which should enhance their ability to deliver quality service efficiently,” said Oropel. “Working in a conducive and cozy workplace will eventually boost their morale, increasing their productivity and efficiency as government workers, hence delivering better and quality service to the people,” he added.

Oropel further noted that the building will serve as a “one-building-fits-all” area, accommodating not only the office for local officials but also serving as a venue for political, social, and educational activities in the barangay. It will also be suitable for medical missions and health activities benefiting the entire community.

Additionally, District Engineer Mario G. Soriano mentioned that the structure might be used as a temporary evacuation center, providing people with a safer and more convenient shelter in times of calamities and disasters.

“This new building may be used as a temporary center during calamities and emergencies, providing evacuees with a stronger, safer, and more comfortable place to shelter during calamities, disasters, and other emergency situations,” Soriano said. “This building houses areas for various local government services, under one shared location rather than being distributed into multiple facilities and various locations, hence, delivery of programs and services is easier and more efficient,” he added.
