ROXAS CITY, Capiz – A 32-year-old person deprived of liberty (PDL) at the Capiz Rehabilitation Center (CRC) faces charges for illegal drug use after being caught consuming drugs in his cell.

Known as ‘Atong,’ the resident of Ivisan, who was previously arrested during a drug buy-bust operation in Pontevedra in 2019, will face additional charges for violating RA 9165 or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002. He was caught sniffing illegal drugs at approximately 11 a.m. on February 22, 2024.

Arjuna Yngcong, the CRC provincial jail warden, reported that Atong was discovered by a fellow inmate serving as the cell leader.

Upon learning of the incident, the cell leader promptly notified a jail guard, leading to the seizure of 10 sachets suspected to contain illegal drugs.

Yngcong mentioned that Atong claimed to have acquired the drugs during a court appearance at the Roxas City Hall of Justice. The warden is currently awaiting an explanation from Atong’s associates who were present at the hearing.

Following the incident, Atong was subjected to a drug test, and legal counsel is now considering the filing of appropriate charges against him.

This case comes a few months after three other PDLs tested positive for illegal drug use during an unannounced drug screening at the facility.
