The Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) and the Philippine National Oil Company (PNOC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to explore the development of a Self-Generating Industrial Park (SGIP), marking a significant step toward energy-efficient industrial development.
The MOU, signed on Oct. 14, 2024, at PNOC’s Networking Hall, outlines a strategic partnership aimed at boosting the energy sector within PEZA-managed economic zones. The collaboration will focus on identifying new energy projects and business opportunities that could transform the industrial landscape.
PEZA and PNOC will collaborate on a variety of energy initiatives, including solar photovoltaic (PV) installations on government buildings, renewable energy projects, and small-scale natural gas solutions for local communities.
The agreement also covers the development of oil and gas depots and storage facilities, with an openness to exploring further energy ventures.
“In previous agreements, we concentrated on solar rooftops as the initial deliverable of our collaboration,” said PNOC President and CEO Oliver B. Butalid.
“Today, we are excited to formalize a broader partnership with PEZA as a strategic ally. Our aim is to address energy challenges in off-grid islands through Self-Generating Industrial Parks,” Butalid said.
PEZA will contribute vital information, conduct feasibility studies, and offer logistical support for the SGIP project.
Both agencies will work together to promote energy programs and projects across PEZA’s economic zones, aiming to enhance clean and renewable energy adoption in these areas.
PEZA Director General Tereso O. Panga highlighted the significance of the partnership, stating, “A common resolve has emerged to develop embedded energy resources, promoting clean and green production as well as ensuring energy sufficiency.”
He emphasized the potential for attracting investments in high-impact sectors such as semiconductor and electric vehicle (EV) manufacturing, which are seen as strategic industries across the ASEAN region.
The MOU represents a crucial move for both PEZA and PNOC as they seek to drive innovation and sustainable energy solutions in the Philippines’ industrial sector.
The partnership is expected to generate new opportunities for energy-intensive industries and contribute to the country’s long-term energy goals.
