The Philippine men’s national football team (PMNFT) delivered its best performance in the ASEAN Football Championship, pushing seven-time champion Thailand to extra time for the first time in the country’s history.
Despite falling 4-3 on aggregate after a 3-1 loss in Bangkok on Monday, the Philippines’ valiant comeback from a 0-2 deficit underscored a resurgence in Philippine football.
“We hold our heads high. This is our first ASEAN semis that went to extra time. Our men fought with heroism; they never gave up, despite Thailand’s immense championship pedigree, despite the loud Thai crowd,” said Philippine Football Federation (PFF) President John Anthony Gutierrez.
Bjorn Kristensen kept the Philippines’ hopes alive with an 84th-minute equalizer, a 20-yard rocket that tied the two-leg series at 3-3. It was Kristensen’s third goal in the 2024 ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup and his fifth international goal in six months.
Momentum swung in the Philippines’ favor as Amani Aguinaldo and Jarvey Gayoso came close to sealing the game in stoppage time, but their attempts narrowly missed.
Thailand’s Suphanat Mueanta scored the decisive goal in the 116th minute, heading in a cross from Worachit Kanitsribumphen to secure the win for the War Elephants.
Philippine head coach Albert Capellas praised the team’s progress, saying, “We just arrived at this level. For a lot of years, we couldn’t play these types of games — to fight until the last second against Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam. It’s the first time we are here after a lot of years.”
The match reflected the team’s growth under Capellas, who introduced a new system just three months ago. PFF Director of National Team Freddy Gonzalez highlighted the team’s transformation, saying, “We have played our best football with the current philosophy and system of Coach Albert.”
The Philippines’ campaign included landmark victories over regional powerhouses Indonesia and Thailand, achievements that Gutierrez believes signal a turning point for Philippine football.
“We can proudly say that this is our best ASEAN Championship stint ever. We are going to bring these gains come March 2025 in the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers, where we are grouped with countries that we have defeated multiple times,” he said.
The Philippines will open its 2027 Asian Cup qualifying bid on March 25, 2025, against the Maldives in Male. The team will also face Tajikistan and Timor-Leste in Group A, with hopes of advancing to its second Asian Cup finals.
