A 25-year-old woman from the town of Badiangan in Iloilo province succumbed to Covid-19.
The woman, who was 32 weeks pregnant, was scheduled for an emergency cesarean section to save the baby when they died, according to the Municipal Health Office of Badiangan.
In its social media page, the Badiangan Municipal Health Office said that the woman had a regular prenatal check-up at a private clinic when she suddenly lost consciousness and was rushed to a hospital.
“Upon history taking, the patient was considered a suspect for Covid-19. A reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction test (RT-PCR) was done and revealed a positive result.”
The pregnant woman eventually developed dyspnea and oxygen desaturation which are typical severe symptoms of Covid-19.
The patient was then referred to a higher facility but because of unavailability of hospital beds the patient was transferred on the 10th hospital day.
“Upon arrival at a tertiary hospital, the patient was then scheduled for emergency cesarean section to save her baby, but was not pushed through because they eventually demised.”
The family opted for burial instead of cremation and was assisted by the Municipal Health Office.
Following the painful incident, the health office strongly advised pregnant women to get vaccinated against Covid-19 during their 2nd trimester of their pregnancy and practice isolation.
“We may not personally know her, but seeing her husband witnessing the burial of her wife and child in a sealed metal casket, hurts a lot. So, we strongly advise all pregnant women to get vaccinated on their 2nd trimester of pregnancy. Vaccine prevents severe symptoms,” Badiangan Municipal Health Office said in its social media page.
As of Sept. 18, the town of Badiangan recorded nine Covid-19 deaths, based on the data from the Iloilo Provincial Health Office. (ERS)
