The Provincial Statistics Committee (PSC) and the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)- Guimaras spearheaded the 3rd Word Statistics Day (WSD) celebration in the province via online platform on Oct 20, 2020.
“We joined the global celebration of the 3rd WSD by conducting Data Expo and Kaathagan sa Estadistika which aimed to share data and innovations, promote progress, and foster cooperation among PSC member agencies,” Provincial Statistical Officer Nelida B. Losare said.
For the PSC member agencies to appreciate the importance of the celebration, SSS Vicente Geonanga presented the overview of the World Statistics Day which highlighted the objectives of the celebration, the efforts done by the Philippine Government as well as of Guimaras province to respond to the call of the United Nations for the observance of WSD.
The event was participated by the Officials and staff of the PSA-Guimaras, Provincial Planning and Development Office (PPDO), Provincial Office for Agricultural Services (POAS), Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) Guimaras, Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) Guimaras, Guimaras Police Provincial Office (GPPO), Guimaras Environment and Natural Resources Office (GENRO), Provincial Tourism Office (PTO), and Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Guimaras.
Each member-agency of the PSC showcased their accomplishments and presented data relevant to the celebration: Provincial Agriculturist of POAS Mr. Ronnie D. Morante presented the Guimaras Agri Profile; Trade and Industry Development Specialist of DTI Guimaras Ms. Melecia U. Paet presented DTI’s performance from January to September 2020; Assistant Statistician of PSA Guimaras Ms. Mary Joy G. Villegas presented Guimaras in Figures; and Planning Officer I/Designated Information Officer of DENR Guimaras Ms. Fraulein N. Dolorfino presented an Interactive Statistical Exhibit of their agency. For the Kaathagan sa Estadistika, Mary Joy G. Villegas discussed how the Consumer Price Index (CPI) is computed monthly; and Statistician I of PPDO Ms. Angel Bhabes G. Pauchano shared Data Presentation Techniques: How to Construct Statistical Tables.
The Provincial Data Expo and Kaathagan sa Estadistika started in 2018 as one of the activities of the National Statistics Month (NSM) in Guimaras province annually celebrated every October pursuant to Presidential Proclamation No. 647 s. 1990; and was conducted online for the first time this year in light of the COVID-19 pandemic safety protocols.
Moreover, the WSD 2020 is an endeavor organized by the United Nations (UN) Statistical Commission with the theme “Connecting the world with data we can trust” which “reflects on the importance of trust, authoritative data, innovation and the public good in national statistical systems.”
The first WSD was celebrated on Oct 20, 2010 and celebrated globally every five years pursuant to UN General Assembly resolution 69/282.
