After President Rodrigo Duterte’s decision of placing Luzon under enhanced community quarantine due to the crisis brought by COVID-19, the Philippine Superliga canceled their prized 2020 Grand Prix tournament.

Featuring top imports from different countries, the PSL Grand Prix is one of the most prestigious volleyball tournaments in the country.

Philip Ella Juico, PSL’s chairman, said that aside from Pres. Duterte’s decision, they are calling the tourney off not only for the safety of the local players but also for the foreign imports.

Some imports are already in the country, while others are scheduled to fly in and that’s what the league is trying to avoid, the exposure of the foreign imports who just arrived in the country to the locals.

The 2020 Grand Prix is one of the most-sought after seasons with a star-studded foreign lineup including Katherine Bell, Lindsay Stalzer, Montenegrin Tatjana Bokan, French Maeva Orle, and Shainah Joseph.

“We needed to evaluate the situation and came up with this tough decision. But we will be back with a bang when all of these are over,” said PSL president Ian Laurel.
