To commemorate the 80th Victory Day in Panay, the Philippine Veterans Bank (PVB) opened its World War II exhibit, “War of Our Fathers,” on March 18 at the Iloilo Provincial Capitol lobby.
The exhibit, organized in collaboration with the Provincial Government of Iloilo, the Philippine Veterans Affairs Office (PVAO), and the Veterans Federation of the Philippines (VFP), honors the heroism of Filipino guerrillas from the Sixth Military District (6th MD), who secured Panay’s liberation before American forces arrived in March 1945.
“This exhibit is a testament to the valor of our veterans and the indomitable spirit of the Filipino people,” said PVB OIC-President Yul Catabran.
“It is important to recognize that the Filipino guerrillas of the 6th MD, under the leadership of Gen. Macario Peralta Jr.and other brave commanders, had already won the battle for Panay before the American forces arrived,” he added.
Catabran emphasized PVB’s commitment to preserving the legacy of Filipino war heroes, noting that the bank is owned by veterans and their heirs.
The “War of Our Fathers” exhibit showcases rare photographs, wartime artifacts, and firsthand accounts from veterans and their families, highlighting the resilience and sacrifices of Filipino freedom fighters.
It also pays tribute to key figures of the Sixth Military District, including Lt. Col. Julian Chavez and Lt. Col. Ramon Offemaria, whose guerrilla resistance forced Japanese troops to surrender.
The opening ceremony featured a special tribute to surviving veterans and their families, along with educational discussions on the role of local resistance during World War II.
Among those present was 102-year-old WWII veteran Pvt. Claro O. Daulo.
The exhibit will remain open to the public until March 30 at the Iloilo Provincial Capitol lobby.
Schools and historical institutions are encouraged to visit and gain a deeper understanding of this significant chapter in Philippine history.
