An alleged member of the New People’s Army (NPA)’s Komiteng Rehiyon-Panay yielded to the police early morning of Dec 13, 2021 in Tubungan, Iloilo.

Police identified the suspect as Ronie Cañon alias Marco, a resident of Barangay Tagbac Sur, Oton, Iloilo.

Lieutenant Martin Pugales, Tubungan police chief, said they negotiated for Cañon’s surrender after intelligence operatives learned that he temporarily laid low.

The suspect is a member of the NPA’s Coronacion Chiva-Waling Waling Command and assigned to the group’s “taxation efforts.”

Pugales said Cañon was tasked with collecting “extortion money.”

Following the negotiation, he agreed to turn himself in Monday at Barangay Zone 1, Poblacion, Tubungan.

Cañon was charged for rebellion in Criminal Case Number 18-83052 and frustrated murder and multiple attempted murder in Criminal Case Numbers 21-0919, 21-0920, 21-0921, and 21-0922.

The arrest warrants were issued by the Regional Trial Court (RTC) Branch 31 in Iloilo City and RTC Branch 76 in Janiuay, Iloilo.

The courts set a P200,000 bail for his rebellion case; P200,000 for frustrated murder, and P120,000 each for the three counts of attempted murder.

Cañon is now detained.
