Rebels’ ‘firearms cache’ seized in Negros Oriental

BACOLOD City – Military troopers of the 62nd Infantry Battalion (IB) seized a cache of firearms allegedly owned by the New People’s Army (NPA) during a security operation at Sitio Bungao, Barangay Trinidad, Guihulngan City, Negros Oriental last Thursday.

Twelve high-powered and low-powered firearms, a magazine of an M14 rifle with 10 rounds of live ammunition, a backpack with subversive documents, and Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP)-NPA-National Democratic Front (NDF) flags were recovered in the area.

State troopers were in the area following reports about the presence of an armed group there.

Lieutenant Colonel Melvin Flores, 62nd IB commander, extended its appreciation to the locals for their timely information.

Later that day, the troopers also engaged in a clash with suspected NPAs at

Sitio Anatuling, Barangay Budlasan, Canlaon City.

Government forces encountered about seven unidentified armed men believed to be members of Samahang Yunit Propaganda (SYP) Platoon, CN1, KR-NCBS. The firefight lasted for about five minutes.

Military authorities recovered a .45-caliber pistol, a. 22-caliber revolver, a magazine assembly of a caliber .45 pistol, eight rounds ammunition, assorted medical paraphernalia and medicines, seven backpacks containing subversive documents with high intelligence value, personal belongings, and CPP-NPA flag.
