Recognizing Filipino Legends: The Hunt for the Next TOFIL Laureate is On

The search for the next The Outstanding Filipino (TOFIL) Laureate, often referred to as “the Nobel Prize of the Philippines,” is now officially underway.

The prestigious award, presented by the Junior Chamber International (JCI) Senate Philippines, honors Filipino men and women, 41 years of age and over, whose exemplary achievements are worthy of emulation.

Recognized as one of the most distingusihed awards in the country, the TOFIL Award celebrates the highest standards of excellence and service, owing to its rigorous and competitive selection process.

Since its inception in 1988, the TOFIL Award has recognized only 150 exceptional individuals, highlighting the exclusivity and honor associated with this accolade.

The award aims to institutionalize the public recognition of outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions to the advancement of their respective fields, public welfare, and national development. Past laureates include distinguished figures from various sectors such as government service, science, arts, and humanitarian efforts.

Notable TOFIL Laureates include Hans Sy, recognized in 2022 for his contributions to business and resilience. As the Chairman of the Executive Committee of SM Prime Holdings, Sy has been instrumental in integrating sustainability and disaster risk reduction within the SM Group.

His leadership has not only fortified the company’s operations but also set a benchmark for corporate responsibility in the Philippines.

As the founder of the Environmental and Climate Change Research Institute (ECCRI), a volunteer research organization, Banaguas has spearheaded numerous projects to promote resilience and sustainable development in the Philippines and beyond.

His initiatives include developing climate-smart agriculture and fishery practices, promoting water and renewable energy solutions, enhancing climate smart infrastructure systems including transport, strengthening health security and gender-transformative schemes, and estimating the GHG/carbon footprint concentrations. Remarkably, he provides these services free of charge.

His work has not only advanced scientific understanding of climate change but also offered practical solutions to mitigate its impacts and risks, establishing him as a global advocate for environmental stewardship.

Nominations are open to every Filipino, whether natural-born, naturalized, or bearing dual citizenship, who meets the age requirement and has demonstrated dedication to their profession or vocation.
